Been back from Hawaii for a little more than 30 hours now. The dust has finally settled. I'm unpacked, dirty laundry in the basket and unwinding on my creaky futon. Yup, it takes me a full day and a half to unpack. I am the definitive bum and I'm only just beginning to realize my true form. Now that things are back to their usual slow and dreary pace, I'll sacrifice a little bit of my nap time and look back at the week.
Considering the trip almost didn't happen (1072 house of sleepyheads), Hawaii was in many ways a trip of a lifetime. I can't name you the single best moment of the trip. I'm not sure if it the was snorkeling with the fishes and sea turtles or watching the sunrise 10000 feet above sea level. Maybe it was the beach football or the amazing seafood. No it must have been the winding roads of hana. Pearl harbor, the sunset at diamond head, enduring the cold onboard the fishing boat. Squeezing inside a seatless van that says "rent-me" on the outside, sucking the garlic juices off the $12 a plate shrimp. I can't have forgotten the $50 buffet after the $1.39 onigiri. Hawaiian host or Maui Gold? Less or lose? The search for the BLB or the ultimate pearls in thai tea. Did I miss anything?
Still, I think I would like to return to Hawaii some day. Maybe in the summer when the waters are a little warmer. I'll head up to Big Island and climb Mauna Kea to see the sky sprinkled with stars(!). Maybe go fishing again and actually catch something. Still haven't seen a humpback whale or any dolphins. There's enough left to do at Hawaii to warrant one more trip. Some time in my life.
I'll leave you with two songs that will remind me of Hawaii. Photos in the flickr (snapshots) bar or on facebook. Peace, out.
